THE STORY:

This project will create a farming co-operative of AIDS widows and orphans or child headed families from Bova village of the Fako district; (about 1600 people) to provide them with economic sustainability by giving them life skills, capital assistance, a start-up fund and technical assistance for self-reliance in agriculture to help them and their families. With the help of good benefactors, these widows will be able to rent a land, buy farming equipments and start training programs.

The main focus of this project will be to strengthen our micro-initiative by providing capital to 50 women to invest in sustainable agricultural practices. Thus, the project will start with broiler poultry farming (500 broiler chicks) and the cultivation of 1200 suckers of plantains (2ha), maize (3ha), and a grinding mill for the feed processing unit will be established to provide feed for the poultry farm. Other crops will be sold to buy other feed requirements. The droppings collected will be used for both organic farming and market gardening. This will help beneficiaries improve farming systems, new varieties of crops and animals, and commercialize their products as well as establish and manage farm business.
Plantain, maize and poultry farming have a symbiotic relationship that can contribute to sustainable farming through maintained soil fertility. In the short run, this project will improve food supply, and maintain soil fertility whille in the medium term it will set precedence and unveil the inert potentials from carefully selected beneficiaries to ensure sustained incomes and recovery from the vicious circle of poverty
This project will immediately intervene in the area of agriculture. Given the activity food supply including meat from the poultry, there will be improved nutrition and thus better health. Benificiaries will have a source of income thus reduced poverty and capacity to meet costs of housing, health and education.
