Hello! I am Joan Akasingura. I’m a teacher at Kashojwa Primary School at Nakivale Refugee Settlement, Uganda, and I’m also the basketball coach.
My idea – and I hope you will support me and my other teachers – is to improve Kashojwa’s Basketball equipment. It has been pulled down, but we need it to be lifted up again.
On the days when we have basketball practice (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays) and play during the school day, many students come to school. Nobody dodges class - they love it. We find it motivates the students, stops school dropouts, helps them manage stress and improves the relationship between student and teacher.
But we need some more equipment so that the children feel better when they play. Right now, we use netballs to play. But netballs are really too light and don’t bounce like a basketball would. So we’d like to get some real basketballs. We also need replacement nets, jerseys and playing attire for the students and some trophies so we can hold a school competition.
I’ll be at the World Refugee Day 5k running for basketball at Kashojwa PS!
