On the morning of September 10th, I will join a select group of 343 North Texas firefighters who will gather at the Renaissance Tower in downtown Dallas. Together, we will support each in climbing 110 stories to honor the 343 New York City firefighters who perished on that same day 15 years prior. The dedication to duty and ultimate sacrifice witnessed on September 11 will always serve as the principal example of the mission of the United States fire service. Memorial Stair Climb provides participants and observers alike a unique way of fulfilling their vow to "Never Forget" the sacrifices of those 343. With most participating firefighters wearing an additional thirty to fifty pounds of their protective gear and firefighting equipment, participants will climb the height of the Twin Towers (110 floors) while wearing a name and picture representing one of their fallen New York brothers. As an Arlington firefighter and a member of the fire service for more than 20 years, it is a privilege to participate in honor of those firefighters who fell with the towers a decade ago. Corporate sponsorships and pledges will benefit three non-profit organizations which support the families of fallen firefighters: the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, the Texas Line of Duty Death Task Force and the Twin Towers Orphan Fund.
