Last year, college student Suzann went to a local university spot with her friends.
Suzann has no recollection of the night after she accepted a drink from a young man.
“ I let my guard down, which is the first step of knowing you are doing something wrong,” said Suzann, a senior at the University of Central Florida.
Twenty minutes later, she blacked out. She had been drugged.
“ I couldn’t tell you to whom I spoke, I couldn’t tell you how I got home that night, “ she said.
She was followed home. As she walked up the stairs , she was blindfolded and dropped in the backseat of a car.
She heard a few male voices.
After this traumatic event, Suzann went to seek help. However, she said counseling was not effective. Support groups or individuals never fully understood what she went through.
“ I decided to create my own non- profit organization in order to help other people who went
through what I had experienced” she said. “ It also is a healing process for myself.”
This was not the only traumatic event in her young life.
On September 11, 2001, her father was killed in The Word Trade Center when she was only seven years old.
These two events have transformed her profoundly and have motivated her to help others by establishing a foundation called NeverStandAlone, a 501(c)(3) certified non-profit organization. It promotes long term healing for college individuals who are directly affected by sexual abuse, assault, harassment or were unknowingly drugged.
NeverStandAlone shows people that they never have to feel like they are alone in a time of need. Our mission is not only to help heal survivors, but also to provide them with encouragement that they can get through the trauma. Our goal is to create a program that provides the survivors with group support, one-on-one therapy sessions, motivational workshops, a life coach, and group trips. Through this program, survivors will be able to reclaim themselves.
Suzann took her negative situation and turned it into a positive.
A survivor feels as if the doors to their souls have slammed shut.
The goal of NeverStandAlone is to banish the darkness and to let the healing begin.
We want to start the conversation
