Nontraditional Employment for Women (NEW) prepares, trains, and places women in careers in the skilled construction, utility, and maintenance trades, helping women achieve economic independence and a secure future.
When you transform a woman’s life, you transform a family. NEW’s free training program starts a woman on the path to a career where she learns a skilled trade, earns a good salary, and is able to provide a secure future for her family. Allison David came to NEW to provide a better life for her family. She succeeded.
In February, Allison will celebrate her two year anniversary as a facilities technician in Times Square -- anything that breaks, she fixes.
When you transform women’s lives, you transform communities. When Hurricane Sandy devastated neighborhoods, NEW graduates and students volunteered in these communities. NEW women, prepared and ready for this type of work, are being hired for clean up and recovery jobs. Across the City, tradeswomen are building schools, housing, parks, and bridges. Avian Perez, a graduate and Laborer with Local 79, volunteered with NEW and Local 79 after the Hurricane. At Avian’s last project, renovating a women’s shelter, the women living there were impressed to witness a woman working construction.
“It’s unbelievable to be an inspiration to people. I would never trade that experience for anything.” - Avian Perez, NEW Graduate, Laborer, Local 79
When you transform women’s lives, you transform an industry. In just the last five years, NEW has placed 1,000 women in industry careers. This is amazing, but in a City where 1.1 million women and children live in poverty, there is much more work to be done.
As we celebrate 35 years of transforming lives, NEW’s mission is more important than ever. Help us give a start to future carpenters, electricians, ironworkers, plumbers, porters, utility workers, and laborers.
Help us fund the future by donating to NEW today.
