Each summer more than 1,300 children attend Y Sleepaway Camp to learn new skills, make new friends, and, quite simply, have the time of their lives. And as many as 300 got to enjoy that experience this year thanks to some form of scholarship assistance raised through the Annual Campaign.
While those numbers are impressive, it’s the individual stories that illustrate the importance of the Annual Campaign, which helps families with need and deserving children. Meet Juan, now age 25, YMCA Sleepaway Camp and other Y programs have had a tremendous impact on his life. We are happy to report that Juan Escobar graduated from John Jay College of Criminal Justice and was sworn in as a New York City police officer this summer!
Athletics. Responsibility. Relationships. Empathy. Respect. Nature. Trees. A sky full of stars. These are some of the things Juan was exposed to at YMCA Summer Camp. It is no exaggeration to suggest that YMCA Sleepaway Camp helped restore Juan’s childhood—as it has done for hundreds of other children in our city—and that the Y has served as his North Star ever since.
