BENEFITING: CHRIS DRAFT FAMILY FOUNDATION
My name is Elizabeth Dessureault, I am 26 years old, a non-smoker and I was diagnosed in April of 2015 with late stage lung cancer while I was 5 months pregnant. Since then, I have received chemotherapy, given birth to a beautiful baby boy two months prematurely and have started a targeted oral chemotherapy which is currently working to shrink my tumours! Seven months ago, I was told that I had less than 1 year to live. Since then, my tumours have continued to shrink, I am able to be with my son Jack, and am fully confident that I can beat this terrible disease!
Team Draft contacted us during Lung Cancer Awareness month and sent us to an Ottawa Senators game in Ottawa, Ontario as part of their "Survivor in Every Rink" iniative. We were so thrilled and grateful that we were asked to attend this game and can't thank Chris Draft and his amazing team enough for all that they do to help spread awareness wherever they go. We had an amazing night as I was presented with a "Hockey Fights Cancer" jersey from the President of the Senators himself. Since I was diagnosed, I have tried to help "Change the Face of Lung Cancer" by showing that anyone with lungs can get lung cancer! I also designed, stamped and sold my own "just breathe" bracelets during Lung Cancer Awareness month and was thrilled to be able to donate over $10,000 fund lung cancer research.
With a 5 year survival rate of only 17%, few lung cancer patients are able to advocate for the funding that is so desperately needed. Lung cancer kills more Canadians a year than breast, colon, liver, melanoma and kidney cancers combined and is extremely underfunded. It is the world’s number 1 cancer killer but only receives 7% of government funding and 1% of personal donations. Young lung cancer is on the rise, particularly in young women, and research needs to be funded to figure out why! It’s time that these statistics change because I know that my life and the lives of thousands of people diagnosed with lung cancer every year depend on it.
Please help support an AMAZING cause and help me "Change the Face of Lung Cancer!"
