BENEFITING: American Friends Service Committee
Sandtown Winchester has the highest incarceration rate in Maryland. As the state continues to use taxpayer dollars for incarceration, with the recent approval of the $30 million Youth Jail, community organizations are fighting to stop jail expansion and create ways to redirect people from incarceration to quality living and opportunity. For decades the Gilmore Homes community has been without any sufficient recreational outlets. The Freddie Gray basketball courts, named by Gilmore Homes residents, are shared by both youth and adults, and play a vital role in building community. Thanks to generous individuals, we have already raised $4,000 to help cover the cost of building the courts, but we still need to raise another $4,000 to complete the project. Please make a gift today to support the Friends Coalition and George Waite. All donations go toward funding the basketball court and creating more outlets such as a food-coop and a children's playground. The Friends Coalition is a group of grounded political activists that have been invested in building community in the Gilmore Homes well before and after the presence of news cameras. $300 million annually for incarceration vs. $4,000 for positive living, what will you invest in?
