BENEFITING: Newport-mesa Spirit Run Inc

EVENT: 34th Annual Newport Mesa Spirit Run

EVENT DATE: Mar 12, 2017

THE STORY:

Newport-Mesa Spirit Run, Inc. (NMSRI) is a 501(c)(3) non profit founded in 2010 to present Spirit Run, an adult and youth road racing and expo event. Spirit Run's net proceeds benefit eduation and athletics in the Newport Mesa Unified School District (NMUSD).

NMSRI is dedicated to promoting youth fitness. As we all know, poor eating, inactivity, and obesity is on the rise in our children. To help stop this trend, in 2011, NMSRI founded its Youth Running Training and Scholarship Program. With the help of members of the University of California - Irvine Cross Country and Track Team, NMSRI conducts free running training at elementary schools to prepare students for Spirit Run. Also, to ensure every child has a chance to participate in the training and Spirit Run, NMSRI makes scholarships for entry fees available to underprivilged NMUSD students.

The program also promotes youth fitness at NMUSD middle schools. In 2014, NMSRI helped start cross country teams at Tewinkle and Costa Mesa Middle Schools. Since that time, NMSRI has made scholarships for entry fees available to underprivileged students at these schools.

Beginning with the 2011 event, each year NMSRI provides free bus transportation for program participants and other Costa Mesa students and their families to Spirit Run.

The program also helps the schools that its participants attend. Each year, NMSRI invites every NMUSD school to participate in  Spirit Run and its net proceeds. Schools earn their shares of net proceeds, in part, by demonstrating commitment to youth fitness and the event. Program participants help their schools demonstrate that commitment and thereby help maximize their schools' shares of net proceeds.

For 2017, NMSRI is planning to conduct training at Victoria, College Park, and Pomona Elementary in Costa Mesa. It will also continue to make scholarships for entry fees available to NMUSD students who cannot afford them, and provide free bus transportation.

Your tax deductible contribution can help NMSRI fund the scholarships and pay for the bus transportation and other program costs. Please donate now to make it possible for all NMUSD to participate in Spirit Run and help their schools maximize their share of event net proceeds.

Should donations exceed the free entry fees plus bus transportation and other program costs, the surplus will be donated to local schools.
