The New School of Music, housed in an 1883 wooden school house, was founded in 1976 by composer, conductor and musician Nicholas Van Slyck. True to his founding vision, The New School of Music maintains a focus on our original purpose of Music for All with affordable programs in a non-competitive, student centered learning environment.
We serve over 400 individuals throughout the year, with our youngest student only six months old to our eldest at 83 years of age, all generally coming from within the Greater Cambridge-Boston area. Teaching these aspiring musicians in our community includes our staff of over 30 teachers who are active professional musicians with expertise in music education in addition to their extensive performing resumes.
Throughout our historic building, which includes our six music studios and one recital room, the community engages in opportunities for private and group music instruction for children and adults alike; ongoing master classes and workshops facilitated by established guest artists and our 2nd Sunday Concert Series featuring diverse programming from our professional teaching staff and guest musicians. Our doors are open to the community and we invite all to make music a part of their daily lives.
