I first heard mention of this organization on NPR’s “Fresh Air” last year and I thought it sounded amazing. The piece was informative- explained the various ways dogs can be trained to help PTSD survivors, disabled individuals, and law enforcement- and heartwarming- as it took an individual look into personal stories about how this program changes lives. Through a Puppies Behind Bars program called Dog Tags, pups are trained to assist wounded Iraq and Afghan war veterans who are living with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and other injuries, like brain trauma. The organization also trains dogs to become explosive detection canines (EDCs), “bomb-sniffers,” to assist law enforcement and the military and to become service guide dogs for disabled adults and children. Through an application process, the trained puppies are placed with an individual at no cost to the individual. This is the outcome of the program, but it’s not the only societal benefit. The puppies are trained in prisons inmates. They live for sixteen months with the inmate in their cells and during this time, “...not only do inmates have unlimited time to spend with the puppies, but they benefit from the responsibility of being puppy raisers in ways that are especially important to their rehabilitation: they learn patience, what it is like to be completely responsible for a living being, how to give and receive unconditional love, and -- since puppy raisers take classes and train the dogs together -- how to work as a team.”
