NEW YORK URBAN LEAGUE MISSION

Dedicated to"Empowering Communities Changing Lives.” since 1919

After 98 years of service, the New York Urban League remains a vital resource for African Americans and other underserved groups in New York. We invest to transform the lives of over 8,000 families each year by providing quality higher-education options, economic opportunity, and community engagement.

Our Three Pillars of Success are:

Education Impact

Annually, the New York Urban League exposes nearly 3,000 young women and men to colleges and universities through our Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Fair. Additionally, since 1971 we have awarded and leveraged nearly $20 million for over 4,000 undergraduate students through our Whitney M. Young, Jr. Memorial Scholarship program. And in 2011, we launched our STEM learning programs that impacted the lives of 135 young girls and boys in African-American and underserved communities to help address the skills gap in technology.

Employment and Talent Development Impact

The New York Urban League is a vital resource for many minority NYC residents seeking to advance their careers. Through our Employment and Talent Development Program, New York Urban League has provided 2,200 individuals with career counseling and core competency workshops in the areas of interview etiquette, strengthening business communication skills and career assessment and mentorship and placed approximately 500 individuals in jobs throughout New York City.

Policy and Advocacy Impact

Nearly 15 years ago, the New York Urban League Young Professionals was created to promote and support the mission of the New York Urban League by training the next generation of civic and business leaders through volunteer opportunities, personal and professional development, and fund development. Today, the 250-member Young Professionals group provides approximately 2,200 hours of community service annually to the five boroughs of New York City and encourages voter registration, dialogue with legislature and presents their signature State of Young Black New York forum.
