THE STORY:

If you’re lucky in life, you can sometimes solve several difficult problems by making one major change. Here in Nicaragua, the traditional cooking stoves impact the family, the community and the environment in dangerous ways. Stoves are usually constructed inside the house without chimneys. The women spend many hours a day cooking for their families and breathing constant smoke. Young children are exposed all day while their mothers cook. Health clinics here report a steady stream of patients with respiratory illness, coughs, asthma and related problems. In addition, these stoves were never designed with efficiency in mind, and they use large amounts of firewood. Environmental damage from deforestation is endemic to Central America, and was part of the reason Hurricane Mitch caused so much damage to Honduras in 1998. Firewood is increasingly expensive, causing poverty stricken families to spend unnecessary amounts of income to simply cook their food. Building improved stoves, such as the Justa stove, improves the health and wealth of the families here, and reduces the need to denude the forests.
In conjunction with Thompson Valley Rotary club in Colorado, USA, and ERSLA in Nicaragua, we are building improved stoves in Northern Nicaragua. The stoves are expensive, due to the high cost of metal, however they provide years and years of advantage to the families who are able to obtain one, to the overall health of the community, and to the world. Please consider donating to help us continue this important work.
