9 Weeks In
August 09, 2016
BENEFITING: The V Foundation
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
I am excited to train and prepare to run my first (and maybe only!) marathon in New York on Nov 6 and am really happy that I will be able to raise money for a fantastic cause at the same time - The V Foundation for Cancer Research.
The Jimmy Valvano story is really inspirational. He was a champion college basketball coach that lost his battle with cancer soon after he delivered the now iconic speech at the 1993 ESPY Awards. It was there that he delivered the immortal line - “Don’t Give Up . . . Don’t Ever Give Up!”. This speech effectively launched The V Foundation and continues to resonate with people fighting cancer across the world. It will certainly be front of mind as I complete the 21 week training program and the 26.2 miles on the day! .
I will be running on the day specifically for my mum who has beaten cancer twice and the many family and friends who have been effected by this awful disease. Any donation large or small will be greatly appreciated.
About the charity: The V Foundation for Cancer Research has a strong presence in the scientific community, and it is guided by an elite, all-volunteer Scientific Advisory Committee, that recommends the research projects funded. Find out more here.
The charity has an excellent financial and accountability rating - learn more here.
About my fundraising effort: I have committed to raise $3250 for the V Foundation by October 15 and appreciate any help in reaching this number.
About the training and race: This really is one of the most iconic marathons in the world . The 42 kms (26.2 miles) starts in Staten Island before making its way through all other 4 boroughs and finishing in Central Park. Here is the route.
The 21 week training schedule started on June 6 and all up I will have run almost 700 kms (420 miles) by the time the marathon starts. I will be doing most of the miles with my beloved daughter Parker riding with me so that should be fun!
