BENEFITING: Sustainable Travel International
EVENT DATE: Sep 07, 2014
I am raising money for Sustainable Travel International by running a sprint triathlon (a sprint triathlon is about half of an olympic triathlon, but it's still pretty hard!).
STI is in the process of creating a new programme (working title 10 Million Journeys) centered on improving millions of people’s lives through travel and tourism.
The tourism industry has always been of great interest to me since my days working in a hotel in the US. But tourism also poses a global threat to our environment, cultures, and landscapes. STI believes that travel and tourism has the potential to be a powerful force for good on the planet. When carefully managed, it can enrich lives, strengthen communities, and conserve resources and heritage.
STI has helped make a real difference in the communities. Examples in one of its primary regions, the Caribbean include:
- reduction of total water consumption by 20% which will have a huge positive outcome for the reef in Cozumel,
- education of 4000 children in tourism opportunities and job creation across the Caribbean,
- planting of 500 coconut palms along beaches in St. Kitts and Nevis, and
- 2,000 tours verified for their sustainability practices.
