As many of you know, my plans during this holiday season to catch up with my beautiful daughters was cut short when I joined a small team of dedicated, reputable civil rights attorneys to document the treatment of protesters, media and local officials immediately after the grand jury decision is announced. We anticipate that whatever the outcome, legal observation and assistance will be necessary for some time to come.
Since we have been here there have been arrests every night of peaceful protestors. This weekend legal observers were even arrested. Protesters and citizens going about their daily lives are living under a state of emergency. Extraction teams are picking out protest leaders and arresting them on highly questionable charges.
We have a very small coordination team. I am here only because people like you understand that very trying and conflictual days are ahead. I am doing this work because I am connected to the struggle of people in Missouri and beyond. I plan to continue to lend my expertise to decision makers and promote tangible, positive reform.
Thanks to some truly awesome people, I was able to raise enough money to come to Ferguson and help build an infrastructure to support the human rights documentation and legal observation. I stretched the money to partially support three additional people to come and be a part of the team. Now, this situation requires in depth reporting and connection with local community. This is not a one off. Young people and citizens of Ferguson need their voices amplified and their story to be told.
What is happening in Ferguson isn’t about an isolated incident. It is about systemic problems that will only be solved through true democracy and respect for human rights. I want my daughters to grow up in a country where they are treated like full citizens. I believe that will only happen if we all give our time, talent and treasure.
But I am hoping through my amazing network we can find a way together!
Thanks to all for reading!
