Nicole's Ride for Our Shared Climate
Organized by: Nicole Ektnitphong
Thanks for being here!
Let’s talk about stories. Stories make up who we are and the world around us. Stories illuminate moments, memories, experiences and feelings. This summer, an adventure awaits for me: 6 day bike ride through Glacier National Park and Waterton Lakes National Park! I want YOU to be a part of this unfolding story. Here is part of my story on why I am doing such a thing + how you can support me in this endeavor.
For your readership (and my organization of writing), here is my three part story:
Part one: Fall 2013
I spent a semester abroad in India and had the opportunity to learn in community with local South Indian activists and my classmates. One powerful part of my experience was hearing small-scale farmers speak about the inconsistency of weather and impacts on their livelihood. Not some distant future far away or future generations, but right then and there in 2013. It was a moment of realizing the global impacts of climate change were impacting ways of life, cultures and communities.
Part two: Spring + Summer 2015
3 weeks before my graduation from Gustavus, I tore my ACL in the left knee! It was one of the most painful and emotionally and physically challenging moments I’ve experienced so far. I had surgery in June and spent the majority of the summer indoors, resting and doing physical therapy. The injury and surgery embarked a journey of critical awareness of my body and self care that looked like committing to my physical therapy everyday.
Part three: Spring 2016
May 8, 2016 - Celebrated a 1 year anniversary of my ACL injury. Thinking of the spirits and souls who have supported me to where I am now. Feeling my strength and power. Here I am active in a body sense, running, biking, swimming, dancing and active in the growing movements around us. Grounded in Minneapolis and organizing at the intersections of racial and climate justice.
Help me write another part of my story: Summer 2016
I will be riding 300 miles through and around Glacier National Park with Climate Ride. Join me in celebrating my healing journey and raising money for organizations that are creating powerful changes for people and the planet.
Let’s do this.
With deep gratitude,
Notes: shout out to my friend Katie Doody for supporting me in writing part of my story.
