Informed Giving - NIDAN - A Solution for Every Soul
The poor in India are actually working poor. India’s informal sector makes up 93 percent of the total workforce and creates 64 percent of the GDP but they belong to the poorest section of the society. Since last 15 years, NIDAN has been working with informal workers on various development issues and providing alternative community based innovative solutions. Nidan champions their cause in India, who proudly calls it their own organization.
Nidan organizes these workers, incubates sector-based collectives and partners with government to demonstrate that models of rights-based, inclusive growth can work.
It advocates from local governance to state and national level governance structures and policy institutions. It has also established many collective enterprises of rag pickers, jute workers, artisans, home-based workers and rural landless workers to provide localized community based solutions. Nidan’s programmes have brought together 500,000 workers from the informal sector.
Among Nidan’s innovative programmes are collaborating with government schools to make the learning level of children age and class appropriate and piloting Nutrition Resource Centres with the Bihar government for severely malnourished children. It is also partnering with SELCO to provide solar home lighting.
