THE STORY:

About me

Hello! My name is Nigel Agboh. Originally from Southfield, Michigan, I have spent the last 4 years in West Lafayette, IN studying Mechanical Engineering Technology at Purdue University. During my college career, I have been involved in various student organizations including two and a half years on the Men’s Track and Field team as a hammer thrower. In the spring semester of 2012 I became a member of the greatest fraternity in Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated. Since then I have been heavily involved in the Greek community serving as the 2012-2013 NPHC Vice President at Purdue University, and I currently hold the position of President of Purdue’s Student Concert Committee. This summer I am interning with the Kirby Risk Service Center in Lafayette, Indiana, as a Six Sigma Black Belt intern under the Continuous Improvement department.

Since joining Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated, the values of brotherhood, scholarship, and service have become a huge part of my life.  As a member of the Zeta Phi Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity we have experienced some unfortunate events with the passing of two of our brothers in the past two years. Levar Nevers , became a member of  Phi Beta Sigma in the Fall of 1999, and passed away November 11, 2011 at the age of 32. He graduated from Purdue University in 2001 with a Bachelors of Science degree in Accounting, and held the position of cost accountant at USG Corporation in Norfolk Virginia. Donovan Dobynes joined Phi Beta Sigma in the Fall of 2008, and passed away December 11, 2012 at the age of 27. Donovan studied Aeronautical Engineering while at Purdue University, and worked for State Farm Insurance in St. Louis, Missouri. Both of these men passed away from diabetes. These two events inspired my chapter and myself to take action in order to spread awareness and help combat this terrible disease.

The Cause

In response to Levar Nevers passing, my chapter brother Paul Holmes Jr. founded The Levar Never’s Foundation during the fall semester of 2011. The Foundation was created with the purpose of spreading diabetes awareness amongst college students, and defeating the stigma that students and adults are too busy to exercise or maintain healthy practices. We believe that there is a benefit living a healthy lifestyle before a person becomes an adult, and that it is important to practice healthy techniques in the young adult stage. This is why our efforts are focused on spreading awareness and promoting health amongst college students. All of the proceeds given to the Levar Nevers Foundation benefit the students and young adults on Purdue’s campus and the surrounding Lafayette area, by allowing us to hold events that will stress the importance, and truly act as a resource for students to use in order to lead a healthy lifestyle.

In honor of my chapter brothers, and in an effort to promote health habits, and spread diabetes awareness, I am running the Chicago Marathon under Team Diabetes on October 13th, 2013. I completed my first half marathon in Indianapolis May 4th, 2013 and am confident in running 26.2 miles. In addition to competing in this race, I plan to put on various events around campus before and after the race which will have a focus on promoting healthy living, exercise tips, and diabetes awareness. Past Levar Nevers events have included passing out healthy smoothies and fresh fruit to students during final exam weeks, distributing information regarding diabetes and exercise information, as well as healthy meal alternatives. We have also partnered with groups on campus to help put on an annual fitness expo, which allows students a platform to show off their physical gains as a result of living a healthy active lifestyle.   With your help we can build upon the success of our past events as well as take our foundation to the next level.
