Nik & Tanja "run the ring" to help refugees in Vienna
Organized by: Tanja Maier
EVENT DATE Sep 29, 2015
This coming Tuesday, Nikolai and I are going to run in the Vienna night run - a 5.3 km run around the Vienna ring road - with a start time of 8:40pm. Our entry fees go towards a charity performing cataract surgeries in Africa.
Over the past few weeks, I've made trips every few days to donate food, water, medicine, clothes, luggage, tents, tables, toys etc. to two charities very active in helping refugees here in Vienna. I've alternated between donating to Caritas, an established charity, at Westbahnhof, and to Train of Hope, a self-started group of volunteers led by a 25-year old film-maker, at Hauptbahnhof.
I was at Hauptbahnhof again this morning, and new refugees are still arriving. It's hard to describe what you feel when you see people who have just arrived literally carrying all they have left on their backs. There are so many people, young and old and everything in between. It is difficult to see and not feel that as human beings we should try to help within our own means to do so. I'd like to do more.
If you'd like to sponsor our run, I will take all funds raised directly to our closest "Hofer" (discount supermarket) and will buy food, water, baby and hygiene items - whatever both charities need on that day. The needs on the train stations change daily, if not hourly, and both organizations do a great job of keeping us up to date on Facebook.
I promise that every $1 you donate will go directly towards groceries and other critical items for the refugees at Vienna's train stations. For more information, you can look on Facebook for "Wir Helfen" (Caritas Westbahnhof) and "Train of Hope HBF" (Hauptbahnhof).
Thanks for your support! I chose this website because for every $100 we raise, we get to keep $99 of them.
