Dr. Mark Watkins
Scott Sports has teamed up with Scott County, Indiana to help them move from being the most unhealthy county in Indiana for the past five consecutive years. A group of students, along with their triathlete Assistant Superintendent Dr. Mark Watkins, have joined forces with Scott Sports to help rid the county of the unwanted ranking. Dr. Watkins is a six time Ironman finisher and is leading his 92 Won't Do! Crew of Scottsburg High School students to raise health awareness in the schools of Scott County. He says, "The partnership with Scott Sports will help us to provide incentives for our students and to have access to Scott Sports gear and for all students to feel what it’s like to be a competitor." Students are going to be asked to commit to ninety-two days of healthy behavior.
They have the tag-line of 92 Won't Do! relating to their present ranking of 92/92 counties in Indiana. "I have yet to finish any Ironman in first place," says Dr. Watkins, "but I sure haven't been last." He says this county has great people who are all pulling together many different entities to ensure we don't get the 92nd ranking for the sixth year in row. A Get Healthy Scott County group was formed in 2010 with the first unhealthy ranking of 92. This 92 Crew thought the name of Scott Sports would be a good tether for a good relationship. After contacting Scott Sports for support they formed a positive relationship and realized Scott Sports has many different ways they can support our students, from running and biking apparel, to helmets and bicycles they can win for their commitment to engaging in a healthy behavior during the ninety-two days of the challenge. The local YMCA will be measuring the BMI's of all participating students before and after the 92 day challenge. The YMCA has already scheduled two running events and planning for a date to have a kids triathlon next fall as well.
Donations for the 92 Won't Do! benefit the youth of Scott County in purchasing sporting equipment and organizing healthy events to move our health ranking forward. Dr. Watkins will be competing in the Florida Ironman in Panama City in November of this year. He has a fund set up through the Ironman racing for a cause and donations will help raise health awareness in Scott County and move us up the rankings!
Scott Sports is committed to helping our youth become healthy and fit. We know that athletes come in all shapes and sizes, and everyone can be an athletic competitor. Scott Sports and the 92 Won't Do! Crew are happy to provide the Scott County community with the Get Healthy 92 day challenge.
