On Monday January 19th, our roommate and good friend Spike Sievert's brother, Jonny, was skiing Breckenridge, CO when he was critically injured. His life was saved by Flight For Life, a non-profit helicopter rescue service that operates out of Summit County, Colorado.
In honor of Flight for Life, Kevin Fung and Alex Herkert will be competing in the New Jersey Marathon on April 25th, 2015. We hope this donation can assist Flight For Life in providing similar life-saving services to those in need in the future.
The full story:
On Monday January 19 Jonny was skiing Breckenridge with a few buddies from DU when he was critically injured. His life was saved by quick thinking by his friends, fast and thoughtful action by ski patrol, a life flight to Denver tended by skilled experts who began to restore oxygen flow, and 6 hours of emergency surgery by four surgical teams. He arrived in Denver in very bad shape and on the very edge of life. Somehow the surgeons stopped the internal bleeding, relieved his brain pressure, and restored his blood pressure, using two complete blood transfusions in the process. He suffered major head trauma, significant lung damage and internal bleeding, a stroke, major nerve and artery damage to his left side, a lacerated liver and spleen, 7 fractured vertebra, 11 fractured ribs, a fractured pelvis, and fractured scapula, and two fractured bones in his hand.
Since then, Jonny has made it through two subsequent significant surgeries and, aided by the love and support of so many communities of friends and family, is setting off on the slow road toward recovery.
The Sievert family would like to honor Jonny by directing all contributions to Flight For Life Colorado. Flight for Life Colorado is a non-profit which is funded through the St. Anthony Health Foundation. They operate 5 helicopters around the state of Colorado, one of which is stationed in Frisco, CO, only 10 miles from Breckenridge. Operating all of these helicopters with so much high-tech equipment and highly skilled staff is incredibly expensive, and Flight For Life Colorado operates at a deficit every year. We want to do everything in our power to make sure this vital service remains in place.
