New Mexico Lions Crane Reading Program

We believe that all of our children want to learn; they want to succeed and be able to have a better life than what is in store for them without a good education. The answer to this problem is to provide better testing for vision problems while they are young and correcting those problems with effective treatment so that they can become successful students and citizens. To accomplish our goals, we first screen school age children for vision problems using high tech testing tools that can determine if the child needs to see a professional eye doctor. If there is a problem, we inform the parents, and if the family is not covered by insurance or medicaid, the NMLCRP will make arrangements to pay for the exam and for any glasses that may be prescribed. After the student’s vision is verified we provide reading training using a phonics based computer program, Mindplay Virtual Reading Coach (MVRC); this program has audio peripherals that enable the student to work at their pace and progress until they achieve a much higher level of reading skill. The Reading Laboratory is currently located at Camino Real Middle School (CRMS) where the seating arrangements can accommodate up to 25 students at a time. The class sessions usually last 30-45 minutes and the students attend an average of four sessions per week; in a period of 80 hours of training, the average student should advance two grade levels of skill and comprehension. We currently employ one person to monitor the class and to make sure the students stay on task. Several volunteers are utilized to maintain the computers. To achieve our goal, we will require financial support. There are many K-12 students in New Mexico requiring some type of assistance; this includes eye exams, glasses, and vision therapy when necessary. Funds are also required for purchasing supplies and computers for the Lab and for maintaining computers, printers, and software in the Reading Lab at CRMS. Since the Reading Lab is on school property, we can not charge for our services. The purpose for this request is to seek funds for instructor salaries and equipment maintenance for the Reading Lab at CRMS. We estimate the annual costs for Reading Lab operation is approximately $14,000 for salaries and an additional $5,000 for maintenance and supplies. Any amount you can contribute will be appreciated.
