Imagine you are hungry. You’ve now joined 1 in 8 Americans (42 million of us) who have just a few dollars a day to spend on food.
Faced with food insecurity, your choices are limited to what you can afford. Because calories are cheap and nutrients expensive, you are forced to fill your shopping basket with food that isn’t the best for you…food that’s causing you harm.
You will make a decision that won’t be great for your overall health but is the best decision you can make under the circumstances.
I founded Daily Table to change those circumstances. Daily Table is a not-for-profit 501C(3) food market on a mission to help those who are struggling to eat well. Every day we sell more than 15,000 servings of healthy and affordable food in our upbeat, clean, and friendly retail store in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston.
And we make sure our prices are affordable to all our customers -- less than half of your typical grocery store. At Daily Table, we work with a large network of growers, distributors, manufacturers, and other suppliers who donate their excess, healthy food to us (up to 40% of the food produced in America goes to waste), or provide us with special buying opportunities. This unique sourcing strategy allows us to deliver affordable nutrition to an economically diverse community. In our community alone one-quarter of the residents live below the poverty line and residents suffer from diet-related illnesses at a higher rate than the rest of our city.
Here is what Jasmine, a single mother of three young children, had to say after her first visit to Daily Table: “I was able to check out your new store today… It was the first time in awhile that I didn’t feel like crying at a grocery store. Money is always tight and with kids I often have to settle for some not so healthy choices just because that is all I can afford... Thank you...you are already making a huge difference for families!”
Daily Table’s model is different from that of other non-profits. We work hard to cover most of our costs through the revenue we get from our food sales. Although we’re on a path to breakeven, there is a gap between our needs and our current revenue. With your generous donation, we can bridge that gap and continue to change the circumstances for thousands of children, adults, and seniors.
This year, for Giving Tuesday, Newman's Own Foundation is matching the first $10,000 that we raise between noon on November 22 and midnight on November 29, 2016. We are grateful for this challenge and, given our need, are hoping to exceed the match so that we can be sure to keep our doors open and continue to serve the community.
