THE STORY:

Debbie Drew wrote -

I am beginning our fundraising on WORLD DOWN SYNDROME day weekend, 3/21!

I am so excited about 2015 - I have already completed a 10K, the "Chocoholic Frolic benefiting Morgan's Wonderland. My first of 5 half marathons this year is on Sunday 3/22, the Alamo 13.1 (known as the "best little Half in Texas"). The 2nd is the "Big D" in Dallas, 3rd is the Utah Valley Half in Provo in June, 4th is the Disney Wine-n-Dine at WDW in Orlando in November, and I'm finishing up 2015 with a Run to Remember, the Illuminations Run in San Antonio in December. Of course, with a few other races mixed in between and I'm hoping to find another half in August/September to maintain conditioning :)

Important things are happening NOW in Down syndrome research because of organizations like Research Down Syndrome (RDS). Currently, three human clinical trials are underway. The trials are being conducted by Roche Laboratories, Balance Therapeutics and Elan Pharmaceuticals. The Roche and Balance trials are investigating compounds that are shown to restore more balanced neuro-transmission, and improved learning, in mouse models. The Elan trial is testing a compound that may reduce beta-amyloid aggregation. This aggregation is a contributor to plaque formation observed in persons with Alzheimer's disease. None of this research would be possible without donations and unfortunately Down syndrome research is UNDERFUNDED! Join us in our efforts to raise awareness and funding for Down syndrome research...scientific studies aimed at developing treatments to improve memory and learning in persons with Down syndrome. Please donate here to benefit Run Research Down Syndrome (RDS), a non-profit foundation that supports Down syndrome cognitive research. The potential of these treatments to address Down syndrome cognitive dysfunction is tremendous - improving memory, learning and communication – and expanding and enhancing life opportunities for these individuals. And of course, if you feel compelled, join us to Race for the Extraordinary! More info on Research Down Syndrome: http://www.researchds.org/

You may have heard that Research Down Syndrome and LuMind Foundation have combined resources and programs. This new organization's mission is to stimulate biomedical research to accelerate the development of treatments to significantly improve cognition, including memory, learning and speech, for individuals with Down syndrome enabling them to participate more successfully in school, lead more active and independent lives, and avoid the early onset of Alzheimer's Disease. If you'd like to read up more on this new foundation, visit their site at http://www.researchds.org/lumind-and-rds-merge/
