BENEFITING: NOAHS ARK ANIMAL WELFARE ASSOCIATION
Noah's Ark Animal Welfare Association is nestled in the small community of Trinidad located in south-central Colorado in Las Animas County (the fifth largest county in the United States, covering nearly 4800 square miles - imagine the size of the state of New Jersey!!) The county is very rural and has a total population of 15,000 people, 9000 in the city of Trinidad and the rest spread over the area from the mountains to 80 miles of plains to the east. Unemployment continues to rise and is currently 11%. People living at or below the poverty level is nearly 17%. Both figures are well above the state average.
Noah's Ark developed from a foster based group in 1998, took over the operations of the Trinidad City Pound in 2001 and has grown into what it is today. We operate as modestly as possible, with our small community consistently standing behind us. Our shelter is small and out-of-date, but that does not stop us from doing what we are here to do! Our dog area consists of 13 permanent kennels and our cat area has 23 cat kennels (VERY small considering everything our team accomplishes!)
Noah's Ark operates on one city contract, private donations, grants and funds generated from our amazing thrift store, Lucky's Fetching Finds. Our staff at the shelter consists of one full-time employee and seven part-time employees - plus our wonderful volunteers in the community!
Some important facts that might make you see that our dream is much bigger than our current facility:
- We have assisted Las Animas County residents with 1500 spay/neuters of their privately owned animals within the last 3 years! We could have not accomplished this without the help of grants from Petsmart Charities, The Animal Assistance Foundation, The Colorado Animal Rescue Express, and our vets at Trinidad Animal Clinic and Fishers Peak Veterinary Clinic and The MaxFund Outreach Clinic.
- By December of 2014 - we are projected to have housed/supported/transferred/adopted 1500 dogs and 600 cats! YES...in one year!! All done in 13 permanent dog kennels, 23 cat kennels and with our small, but mighty staff! Again - all we do for these animals could not be done without the generous donations and grants, especially from The Animal Assistance Foundation transfer grant for 2014.
- We are classified as a NO-KILL SHELTER through Maddie's Fund. Maddie's Fund is helping to achieve and sustain a no-kill nation by providing solutions to the most challenging issues facing the animal welfare community. We are honored to implement their mission of "....to revolutionize the status and well-being of companion animals” in everything we do, every single day.
We have the team in place to build and float a new Noah's Ark, but WE NEED YOUR HELP!!! Our vision is a regional shelter to serve as a transfer hub for the surplus of puppies and dogs in New Mexico (they currently euthanize 500 dogs per day) by bringing them into Colorado and making them transfer adoption ready for the many groups in the state that have a higher demand than supply of adoptable animals. We are strategically located on the busy I-25 corridor to facilitate this exciting venue!
The sky is the limit, won't you join us by donating today? We ask that you donate what you can, spread the word and ask anyone you know that might want to help us GROW!
