In memory of our wonderful husband and father, James (Bud) Musgrove, we are setting up this fundraiser to purchase a bear box in Yellowstone National Park.
Some of you were lucky enough to know Bud and know that he was a strong advocate for the protection and conservation of bears. It was his passion. For a long time he had his own website dedicated to the American Grizzy Bear. He spread a lot of knowlege about grizzly bear safety and protection, gave public talks, created a website on the subject, and networked with experts in the field.
He loved the outdoors and spent all his freetime camping or hiking in the mountains. On August 31, 2002 Bud was hiking in the mountains near Lake O'Hara in Alberta Canada and passed away of a heart attack. It was the most beautiful spot imaginable, even though he went far too soon.
It was the worst day of our lives but we think about him and his passion for the outdoors and especially bear protection all the time. We really hope we can raise enough money, with the help of friends and family, to sponsor a bear box in Yellowstone National Park. If he were here today, he'd be updating his Facebook status about this amazing way to reduce bear/human conflict as we speak :)
What is a bear box?
Bear boxes are locked containers that campers can use to store food that could normally attract bears if left in the open. When bears are attracted by smell it can put the lives of both the camper and the bear in jeopardy.
Bear boxes are a proven method to help minimize conflict and keep bears and people safe. Yet, less than 25% of the campsites in Yellowstone's roadside campgrounds have these critical bear boxes installed!
Even if you didn't know Bud personally, maybe you've been to Yellowstone or another National Park...maybe you've been camping.... or maybe you just love the outdoors as much as Bud did and maybe you can see how important bear boxes could be in a campground. We hope that you can donate any amount to go towards sponsoring a bear box in Yellowstone National Park. Our goal is to raise $1500 which would sponsor a box with a plaque in Bud's name.
