The Norman Lee Stewart Education Scholarship is established to provide financial assistance to a MacArthur High School graduating senior who is pursuing a college degree in the humanities (languages, literature, philosophy, or history).
This award is given by former students and friends to honor Mr. Stewart’s dedication and gift for teaching.
Professionally Mr. Stewart received many awards. In 1983 he was the first recipient of the John Heissler Award for Excellence from Illinois State University. He also received the Teacher Education Award from Millikin University, the Outstanding Teacher Award from Decatur Public Schools, and was awarded an honorary life membership in the Illinois Association of Teachers of English. The listing of these awards does not show the enthusiasm, dedication, humor, and wit that Mr. Stewart brought to his classroom. Many former students would nominate Mr. Stewart as one of the best teachers they experienced during their high school years
The annual merit-based award will be in the amount of $1,000 for one student. An alternate student may also be selected in the event that the recipient does not continue his or her education. If no qualified student is selected or applies for a certain year, no award shall be given.
We would like to ensure that this scholarship is available to be awarded by 2015, when the renovated MacArthur High School is unveiled.
Contributions to the self funding scholarship are very welcome to achieve our goal.
