The North Star Foundation's mission "is to help children who face social, emotional or educational challenges with the help of animal assisted therapy, school visits and assistance dog placements".
This foundation helped our family with our son Lucas who is autistic. At an early age, we adopted Sam, a black labrador, into our family to help Lucas cope with the world. Through the great puppy raiser Irene, and our wonderful trainer Kathy, Sam developed into an amazing social dog for Lucas. Having Sam helped Lucas learn to communicate with children his own age who were interested in meeting and talkking about Sam while at the same time providing some space for Lucas (as Sam was bigger than most of the children). It made Lucas participate in the world instead of going away inside his own head.
Over the past 8 years, the bond has grown and along with help of his little brother Hunter, Lucas has developed into a loving and sweet teenager. The "three boys" enjoy the beach most of all, but the pool, parks, and frisbees are a close second.
I am running to raise money to donate to the North Star Foundation to help another child who may need a "friend" to help them grow. The support that my wife and I received from friends, family, and coworkers when we were accepted was tremendous. I realize not all families have such a great network and I am trying to help someone else who may need it. Hopefully you will help support this cause with me. Thank you.
