NORTH COUNTRY SPCA

Friends for Life

The North Country Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NCSPCA) in Essex County, NY, provides refuge for cats and dogs who have been surrendered, abandoned or abused. Our mission is to relieve their suffering and create a community in which animals are respected and valued. We are a no-kill shelter that gives each animal individual attention, medical treatment and compassionate daily care until a loving home can be found. We educate the public about the proper care of pets and work with law enforcement authorities to prevent and respond to cases of animal cruelty.

We are the only SPCA animal shelter in rural Essex County, N.Y, in the Adirondack Park. We are a no-kill shelter that provides refuge to over 400 dogs and cats each year.

Animals arrive at the shelter in a variety of ways.  Some are brought in by owners who can longer care for them. Others are strays found by animal control officers. Many are rescued by attentive neighbors who notice a homeless dog or cat in their neighborhood and turn to us for help. Numerous animals, especially cats and kittens, are left on our doorstep in the middle of the night. And law enforcement officers bring us many animals that are victims of unspeakable abuse.

We treat all of our cats and dogs with loving care. We thoroughly assess, socialize and train every animal to give them the best opportunity for a new life. Our dedicated staff and cadre of volunteers work tirelessly to make the shelter the best possible alternative until a permanent home can be found. We provide top quality food and medical care, including inoculations, diagnostic tests, and spaying or neutering.

We euthanize animals only when our veterinarians cannot relieve suffering or when aggressive behavior makes an animal dangerous and thus unadoptable.

Did you know that the NCSPCA receives zero money from the state or federal government, and nothing from the national ASPCA?  Our town contracts and adoption fees account for only 15% of our income.  Private donors provide 85% of our funding.

Our staff screens applicants for adoption to be certain each animal is placed with responsible and caring individuals. Our goal is to ensure that each animal gets a second chance – and sadly, sometimes a first chance – at a loving home.
