THE STORY:

The North Creek culvert has been degrading the central Oregon Coast for too long; it is time to restore North Creek.

Providing even $10 to this campaign will demonstrate that you value the Siletz River’s socio-ecological health, and will go a long ways to help secure the rest of the proposed state and federal grants.

  • Restoring North Creek will give back access to 13 miles of cutthroat trout, 5.4 miles of steelhead habitat, and 3.4 miles of chinook, as well as endangered Oregon Coast coho habitat.
  • North Creek is adjacent to Drift Creek Camp, and is accessed by thousands of guests including k-12 outdoor school groups. This restoration will act as an educational tool and provide children with the opportunity to experience the projects benefits through time.
  • Salmonids use the North Creek basin during the summer as a cold water refuge, and temperature monitoring shows North Creek will be an important climate refugia for wild fish in the future.
  • North Creek is managed for old growth forests, and is considered to be within the top 10% of habitat on that National Forest.
  • The Drift Creek sub-basin is a regionally distinguished area for its biodiversity and outdoor recreation.

Currently, the existing 11 foot culvert has rusted through and puts downstream habitat, and rural communities dependent on the drinking water of Drift Creek, at risk should the structure fail.  The proposed project will insure roadbed stability, which has been undermined by the deteriorating infrastructure.

The Native Fish Society, MidCoast Watersheds Council, the Salmon Drift Creek Watersheds Council, Bluebacks Chapter of Trout Unlimited, and the Confederated Tribes of the Siletz Indians are all partnering to complete the restoration of North Creek.  By initiating a crowd source funding campaign our community can insure that restoration becomes reality.
