In 2013, a three-story apartment building opened at 14711 Mack Avenue with thirty-nine 100% supportive permanent housing units. In partnership with Humble Design, a Detroit-based non-profit organization helping families transition out of homelessness by providing furnishings and design services, Northeast Guidance Center turned empty apartments into clean, dignified and welcoming homes. Working with Humble Design’s team and over sixty volunteers, the largest project ever undertaken, involved furnishing thirty-nine homes in three days, delivering three storage units full of furniture and setting up 59 new beds for 51 tenants.
LaBrenda exclaimed, “It’s always been my dream to have my own home. I feel secure and safe. I will be able to think better and focus on what I want to do next. I will be able to get a good night’s rest!”
Mack-Ashland I was fully occupied by September 2013 and remains 100% occupied three years later. Construction begins in 2016 on twenty-eight townhomes at Mack-Ashland II with a 2017 move-in date, and the grant process is underway for thirty-two townhomes at Mack-Ashland III. A full-time case manager assists tenants allowing for high tenant achievements.
Humble Design is again partnering with NEGC to “furnish the future of the families” moving into eight (8) permanent supportive and affordable homes. NEGC’s fundraisers, like the Art Van Charity Challenge, will help with home furnishings and delivery costs.
