EVENT: Together For Hope 2015
EVENT DATE: Oct 17, 2015
Every 40 seconds, the world loses another person to suicide. College students are at even higher risk -- suicidal thoughts, plans, and attempts are most prevalant among young adults. This can stem from the enormous transition that takes place in the lives of students. Even if they haven't moved away from home, all students have to deal with a completely unfamiliar environment: new people, new expectations, a new status quo.
These difficulties aren't so different from some of the struggles faced by immigrants. College students can experience a small taste of the fear and isolation that many immigrants go through. The mental health struggles of immigrants are largely forgotten, but it is important to recognize that depression and other mental illnesses do not discriminate based on a person's place of birth. This is why we must ensure that all people receive the care and treatment that they need. This is why Northeastern students walk with the Irish International Immigrant Center to promote suicide prevention.
