THE STORY:

Alice Rich Northrop Memorial Camp is a non-profit nature camp located on approximately 300 acres in the town of Mount Washington in the southern Berkshires of Massachusetts. It is dedicated to reaching out to inner city boys and girls to give them a nature experience which they would otherwise not be able to have.

As envisioned by Alice Rich Northrop in 1920, disadvantaged children at no cost to their families may see, touch, and come to understand how a variety of marvelous organisms interact with each other and with us.

Northrop Camp is an ecologically diverse wilderness area set aside by the Nature Conservancy to preserve rare plants and animals. In addition about 6 mowed acres of the 300 acre property have, from the beginning, been set aside as a camp to provide inner city children an intimate encounter with the natural world.

Campers can enter another world of infinite diversity which they previously couldn't even imagine.

Northrop Camp is dedicated to the belief that teaching children to respect and appreciate all life, both the natural world around them and each other, produces adults who care about the environment and who succeed in the careers they choose.

For over 70 years, Northrop provided New York City girls and boys, whose families could not otherwise afford camp, the opportunity to learn about nature and the environment at Northrop Camp during the summer. However, a fire in 1993 destroyed the main building. Visit our 'History' page:  History  and learn how Northrop started and how it impacted very many lives. It is amazing how campers have returned home and were motivated in life's pursuits. Our 'History' section ends with a fire that burned down the main building and caused the camp to stop operating.

Today, we are restarting. Our dedicated board members with much effort over the years have worked to strengthen the organization and restart programming. This year we were able to have 3 groups of children come to Northrop. We are proud of Northrop's role in cultivating outstanding citizens. Visit our 'Today" page:  Today  and learn how we have progressed. In addition, consider contributing your time, energy, enthusiasm, or funds to be part of making a difference in children's lives.
