Blue Devil's Fundraiser:

Not Our Duke

THE STORY:

In light of the news that Duke graduate Stephen Miller (‘07) was a primary architect behind President Trump’s seven-country immigration ban, we, concerned Duke alumni, are compelled to speak out. The ban, targeted specifically at the Muslim community, is antithetical to the values that were instilled in us at Duke: compassion and intellectual rigor, respect for the truth and for each other.

Stephen will no doubt argue that the President’s executive order is not actually a “ban,” nor does it target Muslims, but we see his tactics for what they are: a not-very-subtle attempt to promote the same tired, toxic brand of bigotry he has been associated with since his time at Duke.

In short, Stephen Miller, we know what you stand for. But we know what we stand for, too.

We are Christian and Hindu and Jewish and atheist, black and white and none-of-the-above. We are gay and straight, and span the political spectrum. Some of us were born in the United States, some not. We come from the working class, the middle class, and—this is Duke, guys—from places of exceptional wealth.

But after over fifteen years of friendship what we’ve learned is that our differences as individuals are the source of our strength as a community. We know that our commitment to pluralism, to justice and to democracy stems from our commitment to one another. We know, too, that an attack on any one of us is an attack on us all.

Today we stand up for our values, for our Duke, and for each other. We invite everyone, in particular Duke alumni, to stand with us, and to condemn Stephen Miller’s agenda by contributing to the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).

And one more thing – Stephen may be targeting the Muslim community now, but we know that so long as guys like him are in the White House, no community is safe. We’ll be watching Stephen carefully, and for every action he takes to infringe on the civil or human rights of any of our fellow Blue Devils, we will be there to say, Not in our name.

...

More about CAIR: CAIR is the nation’s largest American Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, with 30 offices serving thousands of individuals targeted by Islamophobia each year. In addition to supporting this funding drive, please reach out to and support your local CAIR office: https://www.cair.com/cair-chapters.html.

#NotOurDuke is led by concerned alumni from the Class of 2004. It is not sponsored, managed, or initiated by Duke University.
