BENEFITING: Kalani Honua Inc
EVENT DATE: Dec 31, 2016
Kalani needs a new kitchen! As the demand for Kalani’s educational class, retreat and volunteer experiences has grown, a need for a new, well-equipped commercial kitchen has arisen. To this end, Kalani has partnered with one of Hilo’s most talented architectural firms to design and break ground on our new kitchen facility within the coming year. Our new kitchen will continue to serve local residents, on-site volunteers and community, as well as visitors from around the globe.
Beyond procuring Kalani’s retreat-style dining experience, Kalani has also become a food hub and distribution point for the Puna District - where residents have to drive a minimum of 15 miles to reach the nearest grocery store. In alignment with Kalani’s nonprofit mission, Kalani will continue collaborating with local farmers and producers to deliver product to area consumers.
In 2016, Kalani will also partner with the Hawaii Island Food Basket to distribute “Da Box,” a [monthly] CSA program that will connect families with fresh, seasonal produce grown right here in Puna. In addition, cooking classes, along with specialized health and wellness workshops will be available as part of our new facility in a teaching, recipe-testing, and demonstration area.
Kalani, Hawaii’s largest non-profit educational retreat center, serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner to hungry diners from around the world, 365 days a year! Kalani is now in its 40th year of operation on Hawaii Island’s spectacular east coast.
The Kitchen and Dining Lanai have long been considered the heart of this bustling center of learning and transformation. Each day, retreat participants, local residents, staff and volunteers file in line at our Dining Lanai to chow down on some of the Puna District’s finest local, organic, and seasonal cuisine. More than just a place to eat, dining at Kalani has also become synonymous with creating meaningful connections and engaging in lively conversation.
In addition to serving up fresh, delicious cuisine and unforgettable experiences, the Kitchen serves as an educational facility where budding chefs, foodies, and entrepreneurs can gain valuable, hands-on experience, applicable to careers in restaurant, catering, and hospitality management.
