BENEFITING: The Fistula Foundation
November is not only my birthday month, but also a month when we tend to think about gratitude. I am particularly grateful to have had access to excellent prenatal care and a healthy birth experience. So this year, I thought it would be great to celebrate my birthday by trying to help make other women's exerience safer and healthier.
In case you have never heard of obstetric fistula (basically a hole where there shouldn't be one), it is a terrible and totally preventable childbirth accident that can result from long obstructed labor without proper medical intervention. Women in developing countries with little or no access to prenatal care are particularly vulnerable. When labor is obstructed for days on end, the baby dies and the mother, if she survives, often becomes an outcast in her community because she leaks urine and/or feces through the fistula.

There is a great Nova documentary about the great work being done. It's free online: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/body/a-walk-to-beautiful.html
The cost to repair a fistula and totally turn one woman's life around is only $450.
