Nurse Kelsey Goes to the Dominican Republic
Organized by: Kelsey Cramer
EVENT DATE Aug 03, 2015
Thanks for taking a look at my fundraiser page!
This September, Rush Global Health is sending a group of nurses, nurse practioners, physician assistants and MDs to Santo Domingo. Rush has been sending groups of healthcare providers to two communities in the Dominican Republic to deliver primary care to communities with significant health disparities.
1. Villa Duarte -- a low-income neighborhood where we partner with Comunidad Cristiana de Restauración (CCR), a church that is very active in the community. The population is largely mothers, children and elderly individuals. We conduct clinics in the church’s pre-school area.
2. Iglesia de la Comunidad Cristiana (ICC) -- a church that runs a soup kitchen and resource center for homeless individuals in downtown Santo Domingo. They also provide housing to a small population of older homeless individuals. The population is predominantly male adults.
We will be running clinics in both of these locations to address problems such as HTN, diabetes, STDs, chronic wounds, and URI complaints, as well as promoting health and wellness counseling to patients.
Why does Kelsey want to join the trip?
Every time Rush employees make this trip we build stronger ties to the people there. Often, the same doctors go twice a year, and often see the same patients! Providing consistent health care! Amazing!
This is exactly the kind of work I became a nurse to do: listening to patients, then providing education and health guidance. If you know me, you know how much I value listening and caring for my patients.
How can I help?
Though we are donating our time and expertise, and though Rush covers some of our expenses, this trip is still expensive, about $1,600 for flight, room and board. Any size donation will be appreciated, and will make a huge impact. If you can’t, that okay too, thanks for taking a look at what I am trying to do. The money raised here will go to my flight, and room and board. My fundraising goal deadline is two weeks.
But don’t take it from me! Here’s what a neutral, objective, and random observer had to say:
"Kelsey is a whirlwind of positive energy packaged as a compassionate, strong, and progressive nurse. Help her take her talents to the Dominican Republic, to learn, serve, and nurse at a clinic there. " -Jeff Hannan
