Nurse Midwife Refugee Volunteer for Izmir and Cesme, Turkey
Organized by: Angela Lyttle
EVENT DATE Feb 08, 2016
THE STORY:
2/4/16 UPDATE
Due to ongoing political uncertainties in Greece and the EU, I will now be travelling to Izmir, Turkey. I will be working with primarily Afghan refugees at a camp in Cesme and Syrian refugees in the city of Izmir.
There are over 2 million refugees/immigrants currently living in Turkey. Many do not have the resources to continue travelling to Europe. Many are waiting in Turkey until it is safe to return to their homelands.
These communities have great medical needs. I will be working with a group called MedVint already on the ground in Izmir.
Funds raised will continue to be used to support my travel expenses. Any additional funds raised will be given to Midwife Pilgrim to support future volunteers.
Thanks so much to everyone for their support!!
Millions of refugees are travelling through Greece escaping horrific violence in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, and other countries.
Many women and families arriving in Greece are in dire need of medical care following their harrowing journeys across the sea. Refugees often arrive in poor health, pregnant, with sexually transmitted infections, and significant trauma.
As an Advanced Practice Nurse/Certified Nurse Midwife, I have the skills and training necessary to ensure that women, newborns, and other members of the family receive needed healthcare services before continuing their journeys.
Your donation will help support my travel expenses as I travel to Samos, Greece to volunteer in February. Any additional money raised will be donated to Midwife Pilgrim (www.midwifepilgrim.org) to support additional volunteers.
