Though measles was eliminated from the United States in 2000, outbreaks occur when unvaccinated travelers contract the disease abroad and bring it back to the U.S. Last year’s outbreaks in Ohio, Washington State, New York, California and Nebraska have all been linked to unvaccinated Americans traveling to measles hotspots. Measles is a highly infectious disease, with 90% of unvaccinated people exposed contracting the disease. Measles is life threatening in countries where children have limited or no access to medical treatment. Measles outbreaks are particularly deadly during emergency settings in communities experiencing, or recovering from conflict or natural disaster.
