Did you know that there are approximately 49 million Americans struggling with food insecurity? On top of that, low-income communities and residents are limited when it comes to the availability of fresh produce. Healthy foods must also compromise on quality more often than not, in order to make it accessible for low-income consumers.
For this reason, Union Square Main St. farmer’s market is on a mission to provide healthier food alternatives for members of our community who lack healthy choices through their SNAP Match program. How it works is: SNAP Match recipients use their ‘food stamp card’ to purchase tokens up to $10 and they match every dollar purchased. That is, when recipients spend $10, they receive $20 worth of credit to purchase healthy, fresh, and locally grown food. Considering the increasing gap in income gap within our community, we must take charge and secure access to healthy food choices for members for our community who are most at risk.
Our agency believes that by uniting, we can tackle the nutritional needs of those who are most at risk and empower the underprivileged bt providing them with the necessary means to live nourished lives with independence and dignity.
