Problem: In the villages served by Village Life, hunger and malnutrition in children are significant threats to health and education and therefore overall development. Breakfast and lunch are not provided at the schools and children must walk home, sometimes 2 to 3 miles one way, to get food. Hunger leaves many students without the necessary energy or focus to concentrate on their schoolwork.
Solution: Village Life initiated a comprehensive Nutrition Program in July 2008 as a way to increase nutrition and educational performance for 1,200 primary school students in Tanzania. For $0.04 per child per day, we provide a corn-based porridge called Uji (“oo-jee”) to students of 3 primary schools in Roche Village, and have successfully reduced rates of malnutrition, increased standardized test scores and school attendance approximately 30%, and the schools have climbed from the lowest ranking in the district to the highest. Moreover, lessons of nutrition and healthy food choices are brought home to our local community through partnerships with over 30 Cincinnati-area schools.
Help us make a significant difference in the lives of many children.
Less hunger. Better health. Improved academic performance.
