What is National History Day?
National History Day (NHD) is a highly regarded academic program for elementary and secondary school students.
Each year, more than half a million students, encouraged by thousands of teachers nationwide participate in the National History Day contest. Students choose historical topics related to a theme and conduct extensive primary and secondary research through libraries, archives, museums, oral history interviews and historic sites.
The State of Nevada, each year sends 2 entrants in each of 10 different catagories (1 each from Northern and Southern Nevada) to the National History Day contest at the University of Maryland just outside of Washington D.C.
This year, a single 7th grade class from the Gifted and Talented program at Mendive Middle School had 9 students in 4 different junior categories, win the state competition and were invited to represent Nevada at the national competition.
We have started this project to help fund raise an estimated $10,000 that will allow all nine of these students, their teacher/sponsor, and some chaperones for what will prove to be one of the most educational experiences of their young lives.
These projects are not your typical 'science fair' grade projects, but are actually college level research projects, done entirely outside of school by 12 and 13 year olds.
They worked very hard on these projects and earned their opportunity, now lets see if we can make this a reality for them!
