Northwest Avalanche Center wrote -

We have had a phenomenal rebound season in the Northwest, but all good things must come to an end. As the sun gets higher in the sky and the powder turns to corn, we are turning our attention to next season and our spring fund drive has become a critical piece in this annual transition. We hope you will help us out as we work to continually improve our services, with a big push next year to rebuild the mountain weather forecast on the NWAC website.

As anyone who visits the mountains in the wintertime can attest, the mountain weather forecast produced by the Northwest Avalanche Center is a critical part of an enjoyable (read: safe) day out.

Coupled with our avalanche forecast, the NWAC mountain weather forecast is the foundation to any winter outing in the hills. Our first forecast was issued on December 7, 1975. Our products have come a long way since then, especially the avalanche forecast—rebuilt from the ground up two years ago. When we overhauled our avalanche forecast, we focused on improving user comprehension of our regional forecast while at the same time addressing the wide range of user experiences.

The time has come to bring the NWAC weather forecast up to speed with our avalanche products. Over the next two years, we plan to rebuild how we create the forecast, how it’s entered into the website (saving forecaster time), and ultimately, how the user obtains the information to plan a day in the mountains.

The project begins with a detailed scoping of the current system; formation of a focus group of experts and basic users alike; mock-ups created by a local design firm; and ultimately the website construction. Funding permitting, and with your help, we plan to launch the new forecast page in the fall 2017.
