Cathy Brown wrote -You can be a NWMLS SUPERSTAR too - Help us fight childhood hunger! Every DOLLAR Counts There are hungry kids in every county in Washington during the summer. Going without food even part of the time has major impacts on our children: hungry kids get sick more often and stay sick longer, they miss school more, may be aggressive or lethargic and they miss out on education and relationship building with their peers because they are thinking about their empty tummies. 476,000 schoolkids were signed up for free or reduced price meals during the school year. What happens to these kids during the summer months? Many of them rely on the federal Summer Food Service Program (Summer Meals) that provides free meals and snacks to children and teens to ensure they have enough to eat when school is out. There are fewer options for kids to get food and more pressure on families. Summer meal programs provide one meal a day, but rarely run the whole summer. And only one child in 10 in our state who is eligible for summer meals gets them. There are either too few summer meal sites or they are too far away. For many low-income families, the local food bank is the only answer. Help us fight childhood hunger by donating any amount today!
