NY Refuse the Test Robocall 2016
Organized by: Deb Escobar
Our last day!
April 02, 2016
Last year, we raised $17,000 for a robocall to NYS parents, and over 200,000 parents in the state had their children refuse to take the Grade 3-8 Common Core aligned standardized state tests. When they did so, they sent a powerful message to our Governor, Legislature, and Regents. That powerful message made the mountain move against the corporate backed education reforms that have hurt our public schools, students, and teachers. While there have been some hopeful signs that our voices are being heard, nothing much has really changed for our students. Our children are still taking tests that are grade levels beyond their abilities, causing stress and anxiety, and taking too much time out of their classroom learning. Our schools are being labeled as failures and put into receivership based on test scores from tests that are "designed to fail." Students with disabilities, as well as English Language Learners, are subjected to tests that are beyond their capabilities, damaging their self-confidence. And though there is a moratorium on using the scores for teacher evaluations and student achievement measures, they are still being recorded as “growth scores” for use after the moratorium ends. To date, nothing has happened on changing the Common Core, in spite of statewide forums in which parents and teachers expressed that the standards were developmentally inappropriate. We need to not only move the mountain, but bring it tumbling down. Test refusals will send a message to the NYS Legislature, the NYS Regents, the NYS Education Department, and Governor Cuomo that cannot be ignored. To make that happen we are asking for a donation towards a robocall to NYS parents, to counteract the pressure and inaccurate information that has come from Education Commissioner Elia in her “tool kit” to schools. Parents need to know that nothing has changed and that they can refuse the state tests for their children. For less than the price of a caffe latte, you can help put education back on the road to success for the children of New York. Donate today in honor of your child, your grandchild, your students, and your local school. Each dollar you donate creates up to 25 calls to parents of children registered in school districts across the state.
