BENEFITING: NYAKA AIDS ORPHANS PROJECT INC
Our story begins when our founder, Jackson Kaguri, was 5 years old. His father would stand in front of his children and break a pencil into 5 pieces--one for each child. Can you imagine 5 people sharing one pencil? Despite living in poverty, Jackson studied hard and went to college in Uganda and also attended Columbia University in NYC as a visiting scholar.
13 years ago he returned home to Nyakagyazi, Uganda to find that the HIV/AIDS epidemic had devastated his home. It even took the lives of two of siblings. Thousands of children had lost their parents to the disease. Orphaned and living with their grandmothers, these children had no opportunity to go to school. Many didn't even know where their next meal would come from.
Jackson decided to do something. He took the money he had saved to buy a house and built a small, two room school in Nyakagyezi instead. Now the Nyaka AIDS Orphans Project provides free education to 656 children! We operate two primary schools (Nyaka and Kutamba) and we sponsor our students to attend secondary schools around the region.
Why are we building a secondary school?
It will keep families together!
Students have to travel far from home to attend secondary school. If our students can stay at home, they can help their elderly grandmothers with household chores and remain surrounded by the positive influence of their family and the Nyaka team.
More students will be able to go to school!
Providing education directly to our students will be less expensive. With the extra money, we will be able to educate more children and offer more services!
There will be more supports available!
Students who have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS face barriers that other children don't. Nyaka is better equipped to help them overcome those barriers than other secondary schools.
All Nyaka students will be welcome to attend!
Nyaka provides a great education to all students. Secondary schools in Uganda admit students almost exclusively using test scores. The students with the best scores get into the best schools. If a student scores very low, they will most likely not be admitted into a secondary school at all. Nyaka believes that all children deserve a high quality education. We want to provide the same, amazing education to all of our students so we can give them the best chance to succeed!
YOU can do something!
We are really proud of all the great work people like YOU are making possible in this world. And we're really excited to see the beautiful futures YOU are going to build through this new secondary school! Thank YOU!
