EVENT: World Refugee Day 5k

EVENT DATE: Jun 20, 2017

THE STORY:

Hi, my name is Alex. I’m a teacher at Nyaragugu Primary School at Nakivale Refugee Settlement, Uganda.

I’m running in the World Refugee Day 5k because I’m hoping people will support me and my team of teachers to bring more play spaces to our school.

We have around 1,700 students but we only have one futbol field and one volleyball court where the students can play sports. We need more fields and spaces where they can all have a chance to play. We’d like to fix our futbol field and make it level and safe for the children. We’d also like to have a volleyball court and a netball court, so there are some different sports for the students to play. Right now, we often find children fighting to get a chance to play.

Sports are important because they can help the children to grow. We have a problem of children skipping school, but if we have places where the kids can play I think they will come and stay at school.

I hope you’ll support Nyaragugu and help us create spaces for our kids to play!

My sister is an elementary school teacher in Athens, Greece, teaching in a special school where all the kids are recent immigrants in the country and many are refugees. I think that if she had an opportunity she would happily do this, so I'm lucky to do it on her behalf. 4 months ago
