THE STORY:

It is my privilege and honor to not only be a part of, but lead NYAWC's Team Phoenix, running to raise funds for counseling and advocacy programs for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking.

We are still recruiting runners for 16 guaranteed entries into this year's ING NYC Marathon!  Contact me:kcheng@nyawc.org.

The issue of domestic violence is very close to my heart -- my mother and brother were both victims of domestic violence.  To know that the New York Asian Women's Center is around for Asian women and children, most of whom are culturally discouraged from sharing such shameful struggles, I am happy to do what I can to help make a difference!

This run will be my FIRST. MARATHON. EVER.  Scary, but not impossible. After my recent diagnosis of an inflammatory bowel disease, I wanted to do all that I could to get healthy.  I am training now for a half-marathon, raising funds for the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) in hopes to find a cure.  So I thought, why not run for the New York Asian Women's Center?  What makes this run even more special is that this is my first time organizing Team Phoenix!

We could really use your support, but even more importantly, the survivors need us.  It has always been my philosophy to be a voice for the voiceless -- this is our duty.

---

Team Phoenix consists of athletes – whether seasoned or novices – who are committed to running the ING NYC Marathon, while raising much needed funds for the New York Asian Women’s Center (NYAWC). Runners who commit to raising funds for NYAWC are guaranteed entry into the 2013 ING NYC Full Marathon.  In addition, Team Phoenix will provide fundraising and training support to help our runners reach their goals.

OUR SERVICES:
NYAWC helps women and their children recover from domestic violence and human trafficking. As the largest pan-Asian agency in the nation serving domestic violence and human trafficking survivors, we provide comprehensive support services in over 12 languages.

Ultimately, NYAWC shelters women from harm, teaches practical skills and gives back their self-respect and hope for the future.

NYAWC PROGRAMS ARE INNOVATIVE:

  • We are the ONLY organization that received a grant from NYC Mayor’s Office to serve human trafficking survivors.
  • Our services are tailored for Asian women's cultural, social, economic, and legal circumstances.
  • Because it can be difficult to identify survivors, we train healthcare providers and other agencies to recognize signs of abuse and assist survivors.
  • Adolescents affected by abuse often act out or become reclusive. NYAWC provides digital art therapy and mentoring to help them express themselves constructively, open up and plan their bright futures.

FOR EACH WOMAN OR FAMILY STAYING IN OUR EMERGENCY RESIDENCES, NEW YORK STATE PAYS ONLY 75% OF THE COST. WE SEEK OUT DONATIONS TO COVER THE REMAINING PORTION.

$50 can support a woman’s transportation costs for 10 visits with her counselor, lawyer, and social worker, and for job interviews and trainings.

$100 can pay for one week of counseling, case management services, and vocational assistance for a woman in our non-residential and continuing care program

$250 can pay for two weeks of services.

$500 can cover an average family’s costs beyond what the State pays for in a five(5)-day stay in our emergency residences.

For $15,000 a year, you can improve the lives of a woman and her children.  For $40,000 a year, you can change their lives forever.
