I was referred to NYAWC by the District Attorney’s office after my husband brutally beat me and was arrested. My injuries were so severe that they required surgery. While I was in the hospital, I received a call from a NYAWC counselor who spoke my native language. At first, I was reluctant to talk to her, but I soon realized that she was there to help. She explained my options over the phone.
After my discharge, my counselor helped me overcome my fear and cope with the trauma of abuse. With my husband in jail, I was able to stay in my home. My counselor also helped me to get a full order of protection and apply for food stamps and public assistance. After I recovered, I resumed my job and continued my counseling sessions. With the help of NYAWC, I am cooperating with authorities to prosecute my husband. I am now finally confident that I will be able to live a happy and safe life.
